SCIENCE MUSEUM
The Year 9 Science trip to the Science Museum was a great success. On the 30 April, 63 year 9 pupils invaded London accompanied by a few brave teachers and associate staff. The trip was part funded by STEMNET. STEM After School Science and Engineering Clubs programme allows children to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects away from the restraints of the classroom.
The trip arrived in the metropolis after getting slightly lost in Kent along the way. Pupils enjoyed a guided tour of London commentated by Miss White who pointed out the London Eye, Buckingham palace and other attractions.
The trip arrived just in the nick of time to rush into see ‘Dinosaurs Alive’ in the IMAX theatre. The film travels ‘with palaeontologists as they hunt for dinosaur remains in New Mexico and the Gobi Desert, then steps back in time as state-of-the art CGI, based on the evidence of their archaeological finds, ‘reincarnates’ these prehistoric creatures, from the earliest beasts of the Triassic to the giants of the Cretaceous. The 3D images jumped right out of the screen and made students jump out of their seats! There was lots of screaming and hand waving.
Everyone had to eat lunch on the hop while rushing into the Launchpad gallery. Launchpad is the Science Museum's most popular gallery. It explores science and technology first-hand with 50 hands-on exhibits and shows. Pupils saw themselves on the heat camera, listened to their voices echo down a 30 metre tube and Miss Wells broke a nail while spinning around at the Rotation Station. The spinning platform investigates the forces which act on a spin. Launchpad is all about asking questions and making sense of the way things work.
This school visit will enhance the pupils learning in the topics of B3, Life on Earth and Physics topics.
There was just time to have a quick look at the Space Gallery and purchase a few goodies in the museum shop before we got back on the coach. After getting slightly lost once more, in Croyden this time, we arrived back at Ratton tired but happy.
