Special Educational Needs (SEN)
The needs of all students in school are given high priority and addressed as appropriate. Those with Special Educational Needs may need a different approach or support to help them to succeed at school. According to the Code of Practice: ‘Children have special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty which calls for special educational provision to be made for them.’
There are three recognised levels of SEN according to the CoP, which was produced to provide ‘practical advice… on carrying out their statutory duties to identify, assess and make provision for children’s special educational needs.’ The three levels are:
1] School Action – When ‘a child is identified with SEN the school should provide interventions that are additional to or different from those provided as part of the school’s usual differentiated curriculum.’ (CoP). This will result in allotted support and staff will be alerted and advised accordingly.
2] School Action Plus – If the child ‘continues to make little or no progress in specific areas over a long period’ (CoP), support from external agencies may be needed.
3] Statement – If a child continues to make little or no progress and ‘will have demonstrated significant cause for concern’ (CoP), a school may make an application to the LEA to start the process of Statutory Assessment. This is the highest level of need recognised in school and will result in additional funding and further resources, if appropriate. The Statement is reviewed annually.
All students on the SEN register (School Action and above), have, until recently been given an IEP (Individual Education Plan). This contained targets which were reviewed twice yearly. However, target-setting and review within subject areas and through mentoring has now become part of school life and students needs are thus being regularly addressed. Following LEA recommendation, Ratton has now turned to Provision Management. All the different provisions for a student are identified and listed on SIMs, which can be accessed by staff for their information. Twice yearly, as before, parents will be informed by letter of these provisions and so should be better aware of how their child’s needs are being met.
At Ratton we are lucky enough to have a team of dedicated and hard-working people within the SEN department. These include both teaching and associate staff. The Teaching Assistants are attached to departments, but may also have additional areas of interest or specialism, as indicated below.
