KS3
Art and Design
Our work in Key Stage 3
Students will experience a structured approach to the teaching of Art and Design which focuses on continuity, progression, experience and high expectations. The syllabus reflects Attainment Targets, Knowledge, Understanding and Breadth of Study.
We place a strong emphasis on teaching basic skills and techniques through the manipulation of a wide and exciting range of materials, and media, and teaching the formal elements of Art and Design – Line, Tone, Shape, Form, Colour, Texture and Pattern. The syllabus aims to present art in a wider context and promote a balanced perspective on gender, multicultural and art historical issues. Integral to each project is reference to the work of the artist, designer or craft person from different cultures and periods. During this Key Stage, projects lean towards pupils developing self-managing, effective practice and problem-solving skills.
Values: Inherent to the syllabus is the department’s belief that through art education, children will develop:
• an ability to observe, record and respond to the world in which they live
• visual literacy, visual language, communication skills
• aesthetic awareness, sensory perception
• imagination, visualization, creativity, expression
• planning, designing and technical skills
• critical judgment, analysis, decision making, appreciation, enjoyment
• negotiation, partnership, initiative, individuality, self confidence
Students are encouraged to develop appropriate specialist vocabulary and are introduced to Learning Journals in order to experiment, record and investigate materials and ideas, encouraging independent enquiry. The individual achievements of all students are highlighted by regular exhibitions of work in the art rooms and around the school.
Examples of homework include: gathering materials, research and producing independent outcomes utilising skills learnt in class and this forms part of our assessment policy in line with the National Curriculum framework. The Department offers students the opportunity to extend their learning or complete homework at lunchtimes in room 222. A range of enrichment projects are available on the Ratton Public Drive.
In Year 7, students work under the heading ‘What is Art?’ Emphasis is placed on taking risks and learning from mistakes. There are links to contemporary artists, traditional processes and project-based learning.
In Year 8, students work under the heading ‘Objects and Viewpoints’; projects include observational drawing and painting, sculpture, mixed-media collage and photography. Contextual understanding is embedded through linking established practice to contemporary issues in art and design by creating original 2D and 3D outcomes.
In Year 9, students work under the heading ‘Myself and Others’; this unit focuses particularly on the concepts involved in recording the human condition. Projects are 2 or 3 dimensional in nature but the starting point for all projects is based on work from direct observation or imagination.
Expectations
• Come prepared to learn and participate by respecting others and trying your best
• Listen carefully, ask for help if necessary and learn from one another
• Use tools and equipment sensibly and appropriately
