Ashdown Park Hotel Visit for Year 8 Students
As part of Ratton’s careers programme, all of our Year 8 students are visiting a variety of work places and this week we took a small group to the Ashdown Park Hotel. We were welcomed by the HR team, Victoria and Rebecca who, in true hospitality industry-style, gave our students refreshments and biscuits on arrival. Victoria then gave a presentation about careers within the Ashdown Park Hotel, a background to her own journey into her current role and history of the hotel and the bigger group that it is part of. We learned that there are 150 permanent staff who work at the hotel and around 50 casual staff who work the larger events and shifts. The hotel is part of a bigger group of hotels called the Elite group and it is a luxury hotel with 4 red stars offering conference, wedding & meeting facilities in its 17 conference & banqueting suites, afternoon tea, a fine dining restaurant, leisure facilities, tennis and an 18 hole golf course. There are 106 bedrooms ranging from double rooms to master suites. Victoria explained that there are many jobs within the hotel including reception, personnel, housekeeping, reservations, finance, chef, managers, maintenance & the estates team. There are 4 hotels within the Elite group and therefore lots of opportunities for career progression. We learnt that the most important skills for working at the Ashdown Park Hotel are a good attitude, good timekeeping, teamwork and excellent communication/people skills. Hotel customers expect the very best as they are paying a considerable amount of money to stay at the hotel so staff always have to go over and above to meet customers’ needs. Our students found their visit very interesting and they thoroughly enjoyed their tour of the hotel which included the country club spa, kitchens, master suite and the chapel. Huge thanks to Victoria, Rebecca and the Ashdown Park Hotel team for their time hosting our Year 8 students and well done to our group who were fantastic ambassadors for Ratton.
