Year 8 Work Place Visit to Drusillas
On Monday 24th September, a group of 15 Year 8 students visited Drusillas for a work place visit. After a quick tour of the zoo, they were taken to the Education Centre by James Woodward, Head of Education for a presentation on the different types of jobs that can be done at Drusillas.
The students learned about James’s job as Head of Education. James explained that there are different levels of jobs within Drusillas, for example Managers, Supervisors and Assistants. Students also learned that there are many different departments including catering, operations, retail, zoo & education, finance & administration, estate and marketing. They then had a talk from Sam who is a zoo keeper. Sam started work at Drusillas in the children’s play area then applied for a zoo keeper job where he cares for the animals, feeds them and cleans them and provides enrichment for the animals. Sam studied a diploma in zookeeping. Then the students met Roger the Operations Manager who told them all about his role and what it entails.
A morning at Drusillas wouldn’t be complete without meeting (and handling!) some of the animals so James introduced us to John the Chinchilla, Roland the rat snake and some cockroaches! All part of a day in the life of a zookeeper.
Our students enjoyed their morning in a work place and one of our students has already decided she is going to Plumpton to study animal management!
