On Wednesday 15th January, a group of Year 8 students visited Eastbourne Theatres for a work place visit. We were welcomed by the Theatres General Manager, Gavin Davis, who gave us a tour of the Congress Theatre and the new Welcome Building. Our Year 8 students learnt about the different types of jobs that can be done in the theatre building: Box Office staff who sell the show tickets, Front of House staff who meet and greet the customers, Stage Crew who supervise and operate the various technical aspects of the show production during a performance. We learned that the work of the Box Office staff has changed dramatically over the past 10 years due to online ticket booking. We went on stage at the Congress Theatre & learned some acting terminology. We also viewed a backstage dressing room, which was not quite as glamorous as we thought! Gavin talked to us about how the Artistic Director programs the shows and the different financial deals that are made with touring companies performing at Eastbourne Theatres. The Theatre has a Marketing department who promote the shows to patrons through the Theatre brochure, mailings, posters, flyers and newspaper, online & radio advertising. There is an Operations team who are in charge of running the buildings, finance, technical crew & duty managers. Our students thoroughly enjoyed their visit. They asked lots of questions and are now more aware of what working in a theatre involves!
